Sustainable Plumbing: Groundwater, Rainwater, Drinking Water & Beyond

In order to invest in sustainability, communities, households, and individuals must have reliable plumbing systems that save water and energy.

Sustainable Plumbing Awareness

Efficient plumbing layouts, hot water circulation, wastewater collection, and other sewage related strategies can have a sizeable impact on sustainability goals. For this reason, we want to recognize and share some of the many upcoming recognition days meant to call attention to the important work we do as plumbers, as well as the importance of preserving natural water resources worldwide.

World Plumbing Day

  1. WHEN: Sunday, March 22, 2018

  2. WHAT: An international event “promoting the link between good plumbing sanitation and human/environmental health.”

Organized by the World Plumbing Council, World Plumbing Day is held on March 11 every year to recognize how important plumbing is in society, including how crucial our plumbing is to public health. Groundwater Awareness Week

  1. WHEN: March 11-17, 2018

  2. WHAT: An annual event that “encourages yearly water testing and well maintenance to prevent waterborne illnesses”. In some areas, like the East Bay, there are ongoing efforts extended to include the testing of sewer lines as a contributing factor to ground water’s exposure to wastewater via leaky lines.

Established in 1999 by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), this annual observance highlights the fact that only 1% of the water on Earth is useable, and 99% of that water is ground water. So this is an occasion for both raising awareness and celebrating responsible water development and management.

The theme of this year’s Groundwater Awareness Week is Test. Trend. Treat. This simple mantra encourages each of the 132 million Americans who rely on groundwater for drinking water to remember to test your water, tend to your well system, then treat the water if necessary.

World Water Day

  1. WHEN: Thursday, March 22, 2018

  2. WHAT: A day “focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.”

Held annually, this international event was first designated by the UN in 1993. This is another chance to learn more about issues related to water, raise awareness of the many threats to freshwater around the globe, and take action to make a difference. Learn more about World Water Day at un.org.

National Hug a Plumber Day

  1. WHEN: April 25, 2018

  2. WHAT: A day to show appreciation for the plumbers in your life.

There isn’t a lot to find online about this event, save basic information on nationaldaycalendar.com, but rest assured that our staff will be receiving their fair share of appreciation on April 25. Help us show appreciation to our great plumbing professionals with #HugAPlumberDay.

Earth Day

  1. WHEN: April 22, 2018

  2. WHAT: A day meant to honor the Earth and demonstrate support for environmental protections.

Celebrated worldwide every year on April 22, Earth Day was first proposed in 1969 right here in the Bay Area by peace activist John McConnell. The first Earth Day was held in 1970, and according to the EPA, 22 million Americans took the opportunity to “celebrate clean air, land, and water.” Learn more about Earth Day on Wikipedia and join the conversation on April 22 with #EarthDay, or any day of the year with #EarthDayEveryDay.
